Author: Chi Institute/Monday, June 2, 2014/Categories: TCVM Articles

In the Tang Dynasty, there was an Emperor’s daughter, Princess Yun Le. Ever since childhood, the princess had been very ill and thin. When Yun Le was fifteen, there was a civil war. Yun Le and her nanny escaped to the Shan Xi area. The local farmers saw that Yun Le looked ill and was very thin so they gave her Flatstem Milkvetch Seed (Sha Yuan Zi) to eat. Yun Le drank the herbal every day in her tea.

Two to three years later, Yun Le’s health improved immensely. She returned to the palace after the war and brought the seeds to be planted by farmers near the Palace. When Yun Le’s brother looked ill and was very thin, he was treated with the Flatstem Milkvetch Seed. After her brother improved rapidly, the herbal has been given its official name.

Sha Yuan Zi is used in Jin Suo Gu Jing herbal formula, which warms and consolidates Kidney Qi.
