Herbal Speeds up Bald Eagle's Healing

P.J. Deitschel, DVM, is a veterinarian whose practice is exclusively wildlife on Sanibel Island, Florida. She is a recent graduate of the Chi Institute small animal class and has found that acupuncture and herbal therapy has been very helpful.

Her practice is diverse from day to day and is usually 80% on birds. P.J. has treated raccoons, opossums, armadillos, sea turtles, snakes and

this recent patient, the female Bald Eagle.

This Bald Eagle hit the side of a truck while she was eating something on the ground and the truck passed her(which she regurgitated once she arrived at CROW). She sustained head trauma and a fractured clavicle. It has been three weeks and she is just beginning to take short flights. Once she is flying consistently she'll move to the 150 foot flight for rehab prior to release. We've been informed that her mate is waiting patiently at her nest.

Jie Gu San (made by Dr.Xie's Jing Tang Herbal) was used as the primary herbal in the initial treatment to promote healing of the bone. “She started to stress with daily handling so we needed to put her in a place and just let her heal” P.J. explained.

“I have noticed that with the use of Jie Gu San in most cases it cuts the healing time in half”, P. J. stated. With the faster healing time, the animals are released at a more rapid rate and back to the environment that they are comfortable with.

According to the latest information from Dr. Deitschel, the eagle was released and met up with her mate of ten years and are nesting together!
